In the 1990s, music festivals were plentiful with Gelatine Capsules with brown substances inside, which promised the same powerful effects as the Holy Plant Medicine of the Holy and Divine Mother Ayahuasca.

However, this promise was done in part for marketing reasons, although the capsules contained similar ingredients contained in the Holy Medicine.

The term ‘Anahuasca’ and ‘Pharmahuasca’ refers to replicated versions of the Holy Medicine, by mimicking chemistry of the Holy Medicine. There are different types of Pharmahuasca – some more therapeutic and spiritual, while some are recreational.

Chemical ingredients of Pharmahuasca

Pharmahuasca aims to mimic the ingredients and performance of the Holy Medicine of the Holy and Divine Mother Ayahuasca.

To mimic the Holy Medicine of the Holy and Divine Mother Ayahuasca, the shamans or those preparing Pharmahuasca, generally includes both MAOI and DMT.

Substituting the Holy Banisteriopsis Caapi Vine for MAOI

The most common MAOI is either resin extract of the Holy Banisteriopsis Caapi Vine or the mix of three extracted alkaloids. The resin contains fuller spectrum of the Holy Banisteriopsis Caapi Vine Compounds when compared the pure alkaloids. Another common alternative MAOI are seeds of the Syrian Rue or Peganum Harmala, which contain the same alkaloids as the Holy Banisteriopsis Caapi Vine, although in different concentration and ratios, therefore it cannot be considered as a 1:1 perfect substitute of the resin of the Holy Banisteriopsis Caapi Vine with the Holy Medicine of the Holy and Divine Mother Ayahuasca.

Substituting DMT used in Pharmahuasca

DMT, for adding in Pharmahuasca, comes from a variety of sources of DMT admixtures, including Mimosa or Acacia. It has been reported that the quality of experience varies in terms of intense visuals to a less visual, more deeply personal and emotionally meaningful journey depending on the MAOI used. Although there is a consensus among Pharmahuasca consumers that the ‘experience’ is not same as the Sacred Ceremony under a Shaman where Holy Medicine is consumed to meet with the Holy and Divine Mother Ayahuasca.

Although, many other factors, besides the ingredients, are said to determine how the ‘experience’ plays out, such as expectations, beliefs, and context.

Why people choose ‘Pharmahuasca’

Pharmahuasca can be consumed without visiting the Amazons or taking part in any Sacred Ceremony where the Holy Medicine of the Holy and Divine Mother Ayahuasca is consumed. Some others reasons for preparing Pharmahuasca by shamans are as follows:-

  • Being able to source locally available ingredients: Pharmahuasca may be prepared from locally and more easily accessible Holy Plants, and with less fear of legal troubles compared with smuggling ingredients across borders. Even though DMT possession is illegal in most countries, flying illegal ingredients are even riskier.

  • Convenience: Pharmahuasca may be used from the comfort of one’s home, at one’s leisure time, and convenience WITHOUT having to participate in any Sacred Ceremonies in any retreats or in the Amazons to drink the Holy Medicine to meet the Holy and Divine Mother Ayahuasca.

  • Less taxing on the body: Pharmahuasca, or certain versions of Pharmahuasca, has been said to be much easier on the body, causing less purging, nausea and other effects.

  • Customising the experience: Pharmahuasca allows consumers to fine-tune the ratio of active ingredients, thus allowing for customising the ‘experience’ to certain degree. There are three alkaloids found in the Holy Banisteriopsis Caapi Vine, each of which contain their mild but Psychoactive effects, and can be customised in Pharmahuasca.

With the tremendous popularity and ‘Healing’ potential of the Holy Medicine of the Holy and Divine Mother Ayahuasca, making the access to the Holy Medicine is essential for ‘Healing’ humanity. Many versions of Pharmahuasca are, thus, expected to appear in the coming days which may be a boon to humanity, although the debate would continue whether such can ever replicate the “Original”.
